Campanario
Corcovado
Osa Peninsula - Costa Rica
An Unforgettable
Educational Program and Tropical Learning
Adventure
The Campanario Biological Station lies
in the Pacific lowland tropical rain
forest of the Osa Peninsula in Costa
Rica and stretches nearly 150 acres
inland from the sea.
Campanario is proud to be home to a
wide array of rare and endangered flora
and fauna (too many to count!). From
your beach boat landing, to your jungle
accommodations, to the diverse species
and bird watching, to the exciting educational
program and activities, Campanario wants
you to learn about the wild side of
Costa Rica.
A visit to the tropical
rain forest of Campanario is not for
everyone! Campanario is a remote reserve.
Access is by boat, transportation around
the reserve is by foot, and climate
control is a nice breeze. There are
no TVs or telephones in your room, no
daily mail service, and no freeways.
Fast food service at Campanario means
grabbing a ripe fruit or fishing off
the rocky point. Traffic delays mean
waiting for the high tide or calm seas.
What you will have are warm weather,
warm rain, and warm surf on a secluded
tropical beach, but cool waterfalls,
cool showers, and cool nights. You will
see beautiful sunsets, stay in a lush
tropical rain forest, take walks for
bird watching of exotic species, and
watch schools of brilliantly colored
fish.
The Campanario Biological
Station offers Neotropical Ecology courses
througout the year for individuals,
family groups and students of all ages.
An educational program or tropical learning
adventure at Campanario, far from "civilization",
will change your manner of thinking...
...You just might
not want to leave!
Lodging
Field Station
Campanario boasts of
a large and rugged field station with
all the simple comforts of home including
a large kitchen and dining hall, screened-in
dormitories with bunk beds, tiled bathrooms,
clothes washing area, a large front
porch, and a great view.
Electricity is generated
through solar panels for basic lighting
and other essential power needs. Supplemental
lighting is by lantern or candlelight.
The water is potable, coming from natural
springs.
For the educator, the
field station also has lab tables and
classroom area, library, and some basic
equipment. There is also an outdoor
classroom at the entrance to one of
the trails.
Tent Cabins
For those wanting more
individual accommodations, Campanario
offers five private tent cabins on platforms,
each with its own "garden"
bathroom (Don’t worry, there are
still showers and toilets, just more
open-air than most). The tent cabins
are only a five-minute walk up the hill
behind the field station. The tent cabins
are right on the edge of the forest
and surrounded by garden.
Access to the Campanario
Station is generally by sea, departing
from Sierpe, the closest town with all-weather
roads. Of course you could always hike
in, but that might take you 3 days or
so. Assuming you travel to Sierpe, a
representative from Campanario will
meet you at the designated place and
time, according to the tides, to transport
you down the Sierpe river, through the
largest mangrove forest in Central America,
out to the ocean and down the coast
to Campanario’s protected cove.
Once there, everyone hops out into the
warm surf to help carry the cargo to
the field station and/or tent cabin,
a short walk up the beach. There are
no roads, no docks, and no traffic at
Campanario.
Travel to and from
Sierpe from San José may be by
plane and taxi, rental vehicle, or chartered
or public bus. The San José office
staff can assist you in making reservations
to and from Sierpe, or you can sign
up for one of our packages which include
transport to and from San José.
Do not hesitate to call (+506 - 258-5778)
or come by the Campanario office in
San José for assistance.
